If the drag on the SR-71 were nearly zero, why does it need those enormous engines? With rocket launches, the objective is to get through the dense atmosphere as quickly as possible, that is why they are launched vertically. The dominant force is not aerodynamic drag, but the inertial forces involved in getting to orbital velocity in a matter of minutes.
