The Patriot Act and the National Defence Authorization Act allows the government to incarcerate a citizen indefinately without the benifit of legal representation. I have heard Jailing someone for an undetermined amount of time called "soft torture" where a person, thusly confined, will plead guilty to a lesser charge or a more lenient sentence.
