About 20 years ago, a friend of ours and her husband went to Cuba for a vacation. When they returned, he remarked about how incredibly fit the Cubans were. NOBODY was overweight. We gently reminded him that the Cuban people were largely malnourished and unable to buy enough food - ergo they were skinny - no "fit." He simply couldn't put it together.

It could also be that Americans eat a steady diet of junk food, fast food, corn syrup, potato chips, and generally lead sedentary lives in front of a screen. The constantly being medicated with substances that throw the body's natural functions out of whack, and being perpetually bathed in endocrine disruptors also has something to do with it, though I'm sure Cuba uses just as many plastics as we do, though probably less soy.
