The May 25, 1953, Upshot-Knothole Grable event (aka Atomic Annie) tested a tactical nuclear weapon fashioned into a 280 mm cannon shell and fired from the Army’s M65 artillery piece. Traveling nearly seven miles, Grable detonated with a force of fifteen kilotons 500 feet over a dry lake bed on the Nevada Test Site known as Frenchman Flat.
