Weird thing: some 35 years ago our school visited a castle in Austria. Unfortunately I have
no idea where exactly or what it was called. Anyhow: from around the 1200s. Perfectly intact.
First stop with the guy was up this narrow winding stairs up a tower where the fully stocked armory was located. That stairwell was creepy - low ceiling (not even 6ft, narrow).
All the armour, helmets, etc looked tiny. Like for the 7 dwarves. Guide says, "Yeah, you probably wonder about the small size, but in the middle ages people were smaller". Uhum... Except: next stop on the tour were the fancy quarters of the elite, and whaddaya know? Everything was huge.
Beds 10x15ft minimum. Doors, chairs (not throne-type stuff. Ordinary chairs), all huge. In one bedroom was a piece like a dresser - mirror and all. I'm 6ft - sitting in the huge chair on the dresser I could barely see myself in the mirror. Yeah, people were smaller in the middle ages, ey?
