Intermittent localized temperature extrema are necessary in a chaotic heat sink, such as the Earth's surface racing the sun. And physics will predict that they will not occur over the ocean with it's massive heat capacity and continuous mixing. In fact it will be where there is the least amount of liquid water, say deserts for heat maxima and the interior of the Antarctic for heat minima. Now record extrema requires unusual constellation of coincidence, which must occur infrequently. It is only noteworthy if and only if these extremes are frequently being set and at increased frequency. Remember, humans have not been obsessed with temperature for very long, and our faithful record keeping is brief.
